The cold winter weather can really affect your skin in several ways. Dry skin is the most common result of seasonal weathering. Cold winter air dries up natural oils in your skin because of its lack of humidity, causing your skin to lose it moisture. Your skin then becomes cracked and dry which can make you feel tight and uncomfortable. Winter weather irritates both healthy skin and current skin, which makes skin problems worse. If you have a skin condition such as dandruff, psoriasis or eczema, the winter weather can easily affect it!
Although, there are ways to fight the winter weather effect! Here are a few tips that will help you keep your skin feeling and looking healthy until the spring:
- If your skin feels itchy and dry during the winter, then check your soap and make sure it’s formulated for sensitive skin. You might also want to avoid wearing thin clothes and shoes during the cold weather. However, if you wear too many layers of clothing, you can also affect your skin’s health. Therefore try to wear softer fabrics like cotton, in order to let your skin breathe.
- Many people’s skin gets dehydrated during the winter. No matter how well you cover yourself during the winter, the weather can still strip the skin off its natural moisture barrier and cause the top layer to dry off. For most people, regular use of moisturizer should help take care of the skin against the chilly weather.
- If you have had dry skin, you should know how badly it can get affected. There are several ways to help sooth your dry skin. Avoid taking hot baths or showers as this will cause irritated skin. Therefore, to help your dry skin heal, you should keep your showers and baths short and use lukewarm water instead. Lastly, remember to be gentle to your skin! After a shower, Patting instead of rubbing your skin dry will reduce the dryness too.
- To keep the moisture in your skin, moisturize regularly! Moisturizers can be oils, creams and lotions. The choice you make depends on the dryness of your skin and your tolerance for the moisturizer. Also remember to apply moisture right after bathing because your skin is still damp and therefore locks in the moisture.
